I ordered an MPH Pattern 6604 focusing screen for my Bronica SQ-A. The delivery was incredibly fast. It was shipped on the day I ordered it (Friday) and arrived at my address in Germany on Wednesday! Unbelievable!
The new focusing screen is fantastic! Not only is it much brighter, with a grid, but the microprism is also usable. The split-image indicator also works when stopping down.
I am so thrilled that I ordered another one today for my Bronica GS-1.

I have purchased Bright Screen MPH for my Zenza Bronica S2 and I am more than delighted with the results.
To begin with, my eyes are not very good… to the extent that I find it very difficult to focus correctly an SLR camera without focusing aids, and I have a pretty high out-of-focus failure rate on SLRs.
On the other hand, rangefinders work very well for my bad eyes, and the horizontal split prism in Bright Screen works like the best of rangefinders!
It feels like a superpower for me. I am suddenly able to focus perfectly my Bronica S2 (later model, but not S2A) with Nikkor-P 75mm lens wide open to f/2.8 even on the minimum distance, where the depth of field is just about 2.7mm! Moreover, I am able to nail down the correct focus consequently every single time, without error, on various distances!
I need to admit that had huge concerns about purchasing Bright Screen, because I saw a blog post from an influencer who had installed Bright Screen, and he was not satisfied with the results. There was some misunderstanding in his process, I think. Therefore, i would like to ensure everyone with Bronica S2 – if your focusing works correctly, Bright Screen will work correctly out of the box. And there is no other way, because of how Bronica optics work. Original focusing screen of Bronica S2 has it’s focusing plane at exactly the same position as the Bright Screen. Do not worry about different than original position of the integrated Fresnel lens, don’t overthink the screen thickness because it does not matter in the case of this camera.
Let me describe how exactly I have ensured my Bronica S2 is focusing perfectly. Two very simple steps. First, I have replaced the foam under viewfinder (that is pushing down the focusing screen onto metal railing). I have unscrewed only two small screws under viewfinder on the lens side, and loosened a bit screws on the back side – no need to fully unscrew them! I have used “Camera Light Seal Foam” 2.5mm thickness from Japan Hobby Tool. I have scraped the remains of the old foam and pasted four stripes of foam, on each side of the unscrewed frame (under the viewfinder).
Using the same 2.5mm sealing foam, I have replaced the remains of original from under the Bronica S2 mirror. It was sufficient to unscrew only two tiny screws holding the mirror frame on the lens side, and there is no need to touch screws that are in the back of the mirror frame. When two front screws are gone, the mirror frame can be lifted slightly upwards. Lifting it just about 25-30 degrees is enough to remove the mirror, scrape down the remains of the old foam and replace it with new one. Afterwards, mirror can be slided into the slightly opened frame, to make the entire replacement as non-invasive as possible. There should be absolutely no space between the mirror and it’s top frame. And the focusing screen needs to be pushed down firmly against the rails, so it is completely fixed in place even when camera is held upside down. It should not move at all when pressed. Bright Screen needs to be placed with Fresnel lens facing up – facing the viewfinder and matte frozen glass side down. Original bronica Fresnel lens needs to be removed.
This review would be incomplete without mentioning the downsides of the Bright Screen. There is only one tiny downside – focusing screen is much more delicate than the original was. You can’t wipe if you want your Fresnel to last intact. But it’s catching dusts and tiny particles easier than the original screen. Clean only using the manual air blower. Sometimes it’s pretty difficult to blow away the tiny particles or minute textile fibres that get affixed to the prism. But I would never go back to the original focusing screen of Bronica S2, despite I have one in a pristine mint condition.
Finally, I need to mention that my screen delivery time was fantastic, despite it had to go across the States and the pacific ocean!
